Cholla people have felt themselves
second class citizens for a long, long time
and they escalated their protest
to spirited confrontation with the authorities quickly
in response to news of the detention of Kim Dae Jung,
Cholla's leading politician,
and the declaration of emergency martial law.
전라도 사람들은, 자신들이 2등 국민 취급받는다는 느낌을 매우 오래 가지고 있었는데, 비상계엄 선포와 함께 전라도의 정치 지도자 김대중이 구속되자, 시위는 바로 정부와 극렬하게 대치하는 상황으로 발전한 것이다.
Police and troops responded
with special degree of severity,
partially because of the spirit of the challenge,
but possibly because that was
how they felt they should treat Cholla people.
At least that is how the citizens of Kwangju
are likely to look back on these days
for some time to come.
