C형과 O형은 모두 동남아에서 생겨났다. C형이 먼저 생겨나 북쪽으로 시베리아와 북미까지 퍼져나갔고 O형은 나중에 생겨나 C형을 밀어내며 동남아, 북중국, 한반도 그리고 일본열도까지 차지하였다. C형은 원래 수렵과 채집을 했는데 나중에 유목을 도입하여 서쪽으로 초원을 따라 퍼져나갔고 O형은 농경민이어서 농경 한계선까지만 올라갔다. 烏桓, 鮮卑 그리고 靺鞨은 C형 선주민이고 貊, 濊, 沃沮 그리고 夫餘는 O형 이주민이다.
