Parthians에 의해 유명해졌기 때문에 Parthian shot이라 불리지만 말뒤활쏘기는 그 오래전부터 있어왔고 전투와 사냥에 모두 사용되었다.
이 조각이 발견된 Italy 중부는 초원이 아니다. 그러나 말타기가 초원에서 생겨난 것처럼 말뒤활쏘기도 초원에서 생겨났다고 보아야 한다.

The figures on the lid of the bowl include a male and female couple (either dancing or possibly showing the man abducting the woman). Four mounted archers (Amazons) encircle the lid; some turn to shoot backwards.
