Genetic analyses of the mummies showed that the maternal lineages of the Xiaohe people originated from both East Asia and West Eurasia, whereas all of the paternal lineages had links to modern populations of West Eurasia.

4000년 전에 타림분지에 거주한 미라 13개 개체와 5000년 전에 중가리아분지에 거주한 미라 5개 개체의 유전체를 분석한 결과, 타림분지 미라들은 타지에서 유입된 인구가 아니라 마지막 빙하기 말엽 널리 퍼졌던 플라이스토세 인구의 직계 후손이라는 것이 확인됐다. 현재의 타이가 지대에 살던 고대 유라시아인(ANE)이라는 것이다.
중가리아분지 미라들은 초기 청동기시대 얌나야인과 유전적으로 밀접한 목축집단인 아파나시예보 후손이라는 것이 밝혀졌다.
